Our Mission
eNEWAL is a student-run organization that turns unwanted computers into fully-functional workstations for families who would otherwise be unable to afford a computer.
What We Do
eNEWAL relies on computer donations. Each of the workstations we distribute begins as a donated computer. We accept working desktop towers (Pentium 4 or newer), monitors, laptops (Pentium 2 or newer), power cables, mice, and keyboards.
Our students test each computer to make sure the memory and hard disk work correctly. After a successful test, we format the hard drive of each donated computer, erasing all existing software and deleting any personal information the hard drive may contain.
We install either Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional, or Microsoft Windows XP Professional (depending on the specifics of the computer), and then load Microsoft Office 2003. Both software titles are fully-licensed, in accordance with the terms of the Community Microsoft Authorized Refurbisher Program. When you purchase an eNEWAL computer, you can be sure you're purchasing licensed software and quality hardware.
We set up the computer to connect to NetZero, an internet service provider that allows 10 free hours of dial-up internet access per month using your existing home phone line. We'll also include information about how to sign up for unlimited dial-up internet access for $6.95 per month, or broadband access at higher cost.
We add a monitor, mouse, and keyboard, test the computer to make sure it works properly, and make the workstation available to community members.
How You Can Participate
Would you like to donate your unwanted computer equipment? eNEWAL accepts most working equipment, as long as you're willing to deliver your equipment to our building. Your gift may be tax-deductible. For information, contact us at donations@eNEWAL.com.
Would you like to obtain one of our workstations? Windows 2000 workstations are available for $50, and Windows XP workstations are available for $75. Depending on family circumstances, we may be able to offer discounts on these prices. Currently, we offer workstations only to people living in the Spokane, WA area. For information, contact us at workstations@eNEWAL.com.
Why We're Changing Computing
Electronic waste makes up a growing portion of landfill contents. When improperly disposed, computers and peripherals can release hazardous compounds into the environment. Many computer owners don't realize that putting unwanted computer equipment in the garbage can have long-lasting environmental impacts. By accepting unwanted computer equipment, eNEWAL is reducing the amount of electronic waste in our landfills and preventing the release of hazardous chemicals into the environment.
21st Century learning increasingly relies on technological literacy. Schools are asking students not only to obtain information through technology, but to create their own learning products using technology. eNEWAL believes that every student deserves access to quality computing tools. By making workstations available to families who would otherwise be unable to afford a computer, we're helping make high-tech learning a reality for every child in our community.
About Us
eNEWAL is a project of 5th-8th grade students at West Valley City School in Spokane, Washington. Students manage all aspects of the donation, preparation, and distribution process, under the supervision of a technology teacher-advisor. All funds received by eNEWAL are used to support educational programs at West Valley City School. Hardware donations received by eNEWAL are used to build workstations. In the rare case that hardware donations are unusable, they will be delivered to an e-recycling center for disposal, free-of-charge to you. We appreciate your interest in our program and look forward to working with you. Should you have any comments or feedback, please contact the eNEWAL teacher-advisor at advisor@eNEWAL.com.
